Regular brewing

Regular brewing involve a quicker preparation time, typically taking just a few minutes, and delivers a cup of coffee with immediate and pronounced flavors. The resulting often features more acidity and aromatic notes, providing a vibrant and aromatic coffee experience.

  1. Grind coffee beans coarsely: Use a burr grinder to achieve a coarse grind consistency. This helps to prevent over-extraction and bitter flavors in the coffee.

  2. Preheat the French press with hot water: Pour hot water into the empty French press and let it sit for a minute or two to warm up the glass or stainless steel container. Then, discard the water.

  3. Add coffee grounds to the press: Place the desired amount of coarsely ground coffee into the French press. The recommended ratio is 1:15 or 1:17, meaning 1 part coffee to 15 or 17 parts water. Adjust the amount based on your taste preference.

  4. Pour hot water over the grounds: Heat water to the appropriate temperature (around 195-205°F or 90-96°C). Gradually pour the hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring that all the grounds are saturated. Start with a small amount of water to allow the coffee to bloom, or swell, for about 30 seconds before adding the rest of the water.

  5. Stir gently and let it steep for 3-4 minutes: Use a spoon or paddle to give the mixture a gentle stir, ensuring all the coffee grounds are fully immersed. Place the lid with the plunger on top of the French press, but do not press it down yet. Allow the coffee to steep for 3-4 minutes to extract the desired flavors.

  6. Press down the plunger slowly: After the steeping time, slowly press down the plunger, applying even pressure. This separates the brewed coffee from the grounds, trapping them at the bottom of the French press.

  7. Pour and serve the brewed coffee: Once the plunger is fully pressed down, pour the freshly brewed coffee into cups or a carafe. It is recommended to transfer the coffee to another container to prevent over-extraction. Serve and enjoy!

Cold brew

Cold brew is a brewing method that involves steeping coffee grounds in cold or room temperature water for an extended period, usually around 12-24 hours. The slow and gradual extraction process creates a smoother and less acidic taste compared to regular brewing methods. Cold brew coffee is known for its milder flavor profile, often described as sweeter and less bitter.

  1. Coarsely grind coffee beans: Use a burr grinder to grind the coffee beans to a coarse consistency. This helps in achieving better extraction during the long steeping process.

  2. Add coffee grounds to the French press: Place the desired amount of coarsely ground coffee into the French press. The recommended ratio for cold brew is 1:7 or 1:8, meaning 1 part coffee to 7 or 8 parts water. Adjust the amount based on the desired strength.

  3. Pour cold water over the grounds: Slowly pour cold, filtered water over the coffee grounds in the French press. Ensure that all the grounds are fully saturated with water.

  4. Stir gently: Use a spoon or paddle to give the mixture a gentle stir, making sure all the coffee grounds are evenly immersed in the water.

  5. Place the lid on the French press: Put the lid with the plunger on top of the French press, but do not press it down. This will help prevent any contaminants from entering the brew.

  6. Steep in the refrigerator: Place the French press in the refrigerator and let it steep for a minimum of 12 hours, or up to 24 hours for a stronger brew. The cold water extraction process will gradually infuse the coffee flavors into the water.

  7. Press down the plunger: After the desired steeping time, slowly and gently press down the plunger to separate the coffee grounds from the cold brew concentrate. Apply even pressure to avoid any splashing or grounds escaping into the brew.

  8. Serve and dilute if desired: Pour the cold brew concentrate into a separate container. Cold brew is highly concentrated, so you may want to dilute it with water or milk to your preferred strength. Start with a 1:1 ratio of concentrate to water/milk and adjust to taste.

  9. Store and enjoy: The cold brew concentrate can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. When ready to drink, pour it over ice and add any desired sweeteners or flavors.
